In electrical wiring systems, cable trays are structured devices used to support, protect, and manage cables, widely used in various buildings and industrial sites. It provides a safe and orderly laying channel for cables through standardized design and flexible combination methods, ensuring the normal operation of cables and facilitating later maintenance and repair. It is an indispensable and important component of modern electrical installation engineering.

From a definition perspective, cable tray is a rigid structural system composed of brackets, support arms, and installation accessories, mainly used to carry various types of cables such as power cables, control cables, communication cables, etc. Unlike traditional conduit laying methods, cable trays adopt an open or semi open structure, which allows cables to be arranged in an orderly manner and exposed to the outside (some types have cover plates). This not only facilitates heat dissipation, but also allows for intuitive observation of cable operation status, timely detection of damage, aging, and other issues. Its design follows the principle of standardization, and different specifications and models of cable trays can be flexibly combined through connectors to adapt to different laying paths and space requirements, meeting diverse wiring needs.

The basic structure of cable tray includes the main frame and auxiliary accessories. The main frame is usually composed of trays, ladders, or trough type shells, and is the core part that carries cables: tray type cable trays are made of steel plates or aluminum alloy plates with heat dissipation holes at the bottom, which are lightweight in structure and suitable for laying cables with smaller cross-sections; The ladder style bridge is composed of two vertical plates on both sides and a crossbar in the middle, resembling a ladder, with good breathability and strong load-bearing capacity. It is commonly used for laying large-diameter power cables; Slot type cable trays are enclosed or semi enclosed shell structures that provide better protection for cables and are suitable for use in dusty, humid, or corrosive environments. Auxiliary accessories include brackets, support arms, connectors, cover plates, etc. The brackets and support arms are used to fix the bridge to the wall, ceiling, or floor, ensuring that the bridge is installed firmly; Connectors are used for splicing between cable trays to ensure the continuity of the laying path; The cover plate can be installed as needed to prevent dust, water, and external object impact.

According to the different materials, cable trays can be divided into various types to adapt to different usage environments. Steel cable trays are the most common type, processed from cold-rolled steel plates and improved in corrosion resistance through surface treatments such as galvanizing and painting. They have the characteristics of high strength and moderate price, and are suitable for general industrial and civil buildings. Aluminum alloy cable trays are lightweight, highly corrosion-resistant, and have a beautiful and durable surface after anodizing treatment. They are commonly used in humid environments or places with strict weight restrictions, such as high-rise buildings and chemical workshops. Glass fiber reinforced plastic cable tray is composed of glass fiber and resin. It has excellent acid and alkali resistance, anti-aging performance, and does not conduct electricity and heat. It is suitable for use in environments with strong corrosive media, such as electroplating workshops, sewage treatment plants, etc. In addition, there are fire-resistant cable trays, whose surfaces are coated with fire-resistant coatings or made of flame-retardant materials, which can delay the spread of fire in the event of a fire, buy time for emergency power supply of cables, and are suitable for laying important circuits such as fire protection systems.

The main functions of cable trays are reflected in three aspects: protection, management, and optimization of cable laying. In terms of protection, it can isolate cables from mechanical damage, chemical corrosion, dust and water vapor in the external environment, reduce cable failures caused by external forces or environmental factors, and extend the service life of cables. In terms of management, cable trays are designed with layers and zones to separate cables of different functions and voltage levels, avoiding mutual interference between cables. Especially for control cables and communication cables, it can reduce signal interference and ensure transmission quality. In terms of optimizing cable laying, cable trays can be flexibly designed into various paths such as horizontal, vertical, turning, climbing, etc. according to the building structure and wiring requirements, fully utilizing the building space to make cable laying more orderly and beautiful, avoiding the phenomenon of disorderly cables, and providing convenience for later expansion and renovation. Only by adding cable tray units can new cables be added.
